November 1941 — Two hundred and five dollars

On Wednesday, November 12, 1941, the board of public works awarded a contract for the wrecking of the house at 1522 Kane Street. The property was to be occupied by the new branch library.

Three firms bid to remove or wreck it. August Witt of 946 Adams Street was awarded the work.

The house:

$205

The garage:

$40

The garage was bought by Peter Nelson and Son — the contractor who had lost the general contract for the library by fifty dollars six weeks earlier. They were to use it as a tool house while they worked on the site, and remove it when the library was finished.

Under the terms of the award, Witt was to have the property cleared by the twenty-fourth of November.

The house in the photograph on this page — the one with the porch and the tree and the sidewalk running past it, photographed by the Tribune on June 20, 1941 — was taken down thirteen days before Thanksgiving, for two hundred and five dollars. Two weeks later the United States was at war.
